How to use IMVU triggers, poses and rooms
Triggers are chat keywords that start animations on IMVU. This guide covers how to activate them on Mobile, PC and IMVU Classic, how to chain keywords, and what to check when a trigger does not respond. Adult products are for users aged 18 or over, in private rooms only.
Step by step
1. Wear or place the product
Open your inventory (Mobile: Shop / My items — Desktop: Dress Up) and equip the trigger product, or use the furniture / room item so the animation is loaded in the scene.
2. Open a private room
Enter a room you own or have permission in. Adult animations require a private room and participants who are 18 or over. Public rooms usually block them.
3. Type the trigger keyword in chat
Type the exact keyword from the product's trigger list into the chat box and press Enter — for example a word between asterisks or a short command. No spaces or extra punctuation.
4. Chain and stop animations
Most products accept several keywords: one to start, others to change speed or position, and one to stop. Typing another keyword replaces the current animation.
5. Check compatibility if nothing happens
Confirm you are on the client the product supports (Mobile, PC or Classic), that the item is actually worn, and that both avatars have the required products for paired animations.
Trigger types you will find
- Wearable triggers — animations attached to a product you equip on your avatar.
- Room triggers — animations built into a room or piece of furniture; anyone in the room can start them.
- Poses — static or looping positions used for photos and scenes, usually without a paired partner.
- Permanent products — items that stay in your inventory instead of expiring, so the keywords keep working.
Common questions
- What is an IMVU trigger?
- A trigger is a keyword typed in chat that starts an animation on a product you are wearing or in a room you are in. Typing the keyword plays the animation for everyone in the room.
- Why is my IMVU trigger not working?
- The most common causes are: the product is not being worn or not derivable in that room, you are typing the keyword with extra characters, the room does not allow the animation, or the product is a mobile-only or PC-only version. Re-check the trigger list that comes with the product and make sure you are on the supported client.
- Do triggers work on IMVU Mobile?
- Yes, when the product has a mobile-compatible version. Some older products only animate on IMVU Desktop or IMVU Classic, so always check the product page for the supported clients.
- Can other people see my triggers?
- Animations play for everyone in the room. Adult content should only be used in private rooms with participants aged 18 or over, following the IMVU rules for adult access.
